Top Ten FAQs About Lasik

What is LASIK?

Lasik is a quick, safe, and effective surgical procedure to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A qualified surgeon uses a precise surgical laser beam to re-shape the cornea to correctly focus images and improve your vision.

Highlights

  • LASIK is performed as an out-patient procedure.
  • The procedure is brief, about 10 minutes per eye.
  • Most patients experience little or no discomfort.
  • The eye is anesthetized with drops prior to the procedure.
  • Vision may fluctuate during the healing process. However, functional vision is usually attained within 24 hours.

History of Lasik Eye Surgery

LASIK is the acronym for "Laser Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis" - the latest surgical procedure to reduce a person's dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The basis for this procedure was developed in the l960's and has evolved into an effective procedure to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. LASIK combines the advantages of a skilled surgeon and the advanced technology of the Excimer Laser to provide you with exceptional post-surgical results.

About the Procedure

During the LASIK procedure, a Microkeratome first creates a cap by making a thin incision on the surface of the cornea. The cap is then folded back from the surface of the eye and the laser is used to gently re-sculpt the cornea. The Excimer laser is computer-guided and has an accuracy of one micron or 1/1000 of a millimeter!!!

Who Qualifies for LASIK Surgery?

There is no upper age limit for healthy eyes. Many active older adults are choosing Laser Vision Correction. However, there is a difference between true farsightedness and the condition known as Presbyopia which is an age-related need to wear reading glasses or bifocals to view objects up close (ie. reading, computers, sewing, etc...).

Mono-Vision Option

Those who qualify for Laser Vision Correction and are currently wearing bifocals or trifocals have two options. You can choose mono-vision in which one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other eye corrected for reading vision, or you can have both eyes corrected for distance vision and use reading glasses for near work.
